Querying: Part One

I was on a panel on querying about a month ago at The Life, Universe and Everything Symposium and thought I'd share some thoughts on it. Hopefully it can help someone. I'll do it in a few different parts so I don't have a post that's super long. :)

So, querying. How do I know I'm ready to start?

Let's talk about the WHEN:

1-Finish your book: VERY IMPORTANT. Do not query unless you have a finished book to send to an agent. A query is like a job interview. If you query an agent with half of a book, or an idea, then you've made a very bad first impression. Agents want books. They want it finished, polished and as perfect as you can get it. You don't want to mess up a chance at getting an agent by not having a finished book.

2-Edit and Revise: Your first draft is just that. A first draft. It's not polished, it's not even close to being perfect, even if you think it is. Please, please revise and edit and go over it to make it the best you can get it.

3-Critique Partners/Beta Readers: Get yourself some awesome critique partners and beta readers. Critique partners go over your book carefully, pointing out plot holes, etc. They will also catch all the dumb little mistakes you've made in your book. Because everyone makes them. :) Beta readers will look at the bigger picture and let you know what's working vs what needs to be changed about the plot, characters, etc. I like to have my critique partners read my book first. Then I do a round of revisions and send it to some trusted beta readers. The readers then tell me what else is not working or what is and I revise accordingly if I agree.

*To find critique partners, get involved in the writing community. Go to conferences, join writing organizations. It's hard to put yourself out there, but so many writers are going through the same thing you are. There are a lot of us that are introverts and that's okay. Get out of your comfort zone and make some new friends. You never know how they'll impact your life for the better until much later. I've met so many wonderful people which have become some of my closest friends.

4-Revise again: Once your get all of your revisions based on readers done, go through it again and make sure the story flows well.

5-Go through it again and make it shine: When your plot is nice and shiny, go through and look for repetitive words, little mistakes, make sure your sentences are nice and tight, etc.

You know, there's never a time when you'll feel like you're ready to query. If you've gone over it a million times, edited the crap out of it, revised it several times, had beta readers and revised according to their suggestions and just can't stand to look at it anymore, take a look at it once more, and put on your brave face. It's SO hard to let your book of your hands and send it to agents. So hard. But if you want this, you can do it. And it will be worth it. Stay tuned for more on querying. :)

What I'm Reading!

Hello my friends! I've been reading a lot lately and wanted to share some of my finds! :)

To Read: Woven by David Powers King and Michael Jensen

So, I just got this beauty in the mail! Seriously, the cover is gorgeous. I've been staring at it all day. Can't wait to dive in and a HUGE congrats to David and Michael! I've been following their writing journey for years now and I'm thrilled for their success.

Reading Now: Keeper of the Lost Cities: Exile by Shannon Messenger

It's taken me forever to read this one, but I absolutely loved Keeper of the Lost Cities and I'm in love with this one already. I'm sure I've mentioned that Middle Grade is my favorite genre to read. I love it. And have you seen the new cover for the fourth book to this series? TO DIE! It's BEAUTIFUL!
You may want to head over to Shannon's blog to check it out. :)

Finished Reading: Son of War, Daughter of Chaos by Janette Rallison

I've been a huge fan of Janette Rallison's books for years. So, when I heard she had a new book, I was all over that. And I'm just going to say it. I loved it! It was so different from other books I've read lately, and I seriously loved everything about it. The characters, the storyline, everything! I'm really really hoping for a sequel, and lately, I don't say that very often. Anyway, check it out on Amazon ASAP! :)

What I'm Reading

Can you believe it's already Thanksgiving week?  I don't know about you guys, but I swear 2014 was the fastest year ever. It seriously flew by. That being said, I'm so excited for this wonderful Thanksgiving/Christmas season full of hot chocolate, snow and watching my children love every second of it.

Okay, enough of my sappy rambling. :) Let's get to what I've been reading!

I've Read:

Atlantia by Ally Condie.

I finished this one a few weeks ago. An interesting world, a story with family at its core and of course I love the cover. That's partly why I do these reading posts. Because COVERS! Love them.

Reading Now:

Cragbridge Hall (Book 2): The Avatar Battle by Chad Morris

I loved the first book in the series and this one picks up right after the crazy events of the last book. I'm a HUGE fan of middle grade. It's probably my favorite age group to read. Anyway, this one is awesome so far! Huge fan of Chad Morris and my kids are too!

 Up Next:

 Born Wicked by Jessica Spotswood

I've had this book on my to-read list FOREVER. So I'm super excited to get to it this weekend! Beautiful cover, interesting premise, and I've heard great things!

Read anything good lately? I'd love to hear about it!

Also, for my US friends, have a WONDERFUL THANKSGIVING!! My non-US friends, grab a slice of pie and enjoy your week. :)

What I'm Reading

So... I usually do my posts a little different with going to read, reading now and read, but I've read so much the past week that I'm going to post three books that I've already read. :) Seriously. Can there be any more "reads" added to that sentence above? Haha! Anyway, here are some great reads from this week.

The CURE FOR DREAMING by Cat Winters. Seriously guys. Cat Winters is one of my new favorite authors. Love her books. They're so eerie with great characters and awesome twists. Loved this one so much and cannot WAIT for her next book that comes out next year! Isn't that cover super intriguing and creeptastic? Yes.

On The Fence by Kasie West. This book was JUST what I needed. So cute and romantic with real tough issues as well. This one was definitely a favorite this year. And how freaking cute is that cover?
Just finished The Unhappening of Genesis Lee by Shallee McArthur today! I loved this one as well. So unique! I've never read anything like it before. Link bracelets that store memories? A cute boy? A girl who will risk everything to find out the truth? Great mystery, characters and story. And such a pretty and unique cover that looks awesome on my book shelf. Pick it up guys. You won't be disappointed. :)

What have you guys been reading lately? Any book recs I should know about?

What I'm Reading

Since I posted about awesome books last Monday, I'm going to start doing it weekly. I've been reading a lot lately and love sharing my love of books with you all. So, here are my book recs for the week!

So, I finished this amazing beautiful book a few weeks ago and I absolutely loved it. And that COVER! *drools* Definitely getting this one to look pretty on my bookshelf. This book was so interesting and amazing and beautiful. I loved the two main characters, the world, the COVER. Anyway, check it out. It's awesome. I'd compare it to Titanic in Space. Brilliant.

These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

 Reading Now:

This book is super creepy and crazy and all of the above. An alien invasion, death, survival, etc. I don't know why it took me so long to read this, but it's awesome already. Can't wait to finish it!

In the After by Demitria Lunetta

 Up Next:

This is a new release and I love how different the cover is. Isn't it awesome? I remember when Jolene wrote this book. She says it has her favorite character she's ever written inside these pages. Can't wait to crack it open!

Stronger than you Know by Jolene Perry
