In which I admit a dumb fear of mine ...

I have Hastenburaphobia.

I actually didn't know it had a name until about a year ago. Any guesses what it could be? :)

It's a fear of grass.

Yes. It's true. That soft, green carpet of grass in your backyard that's perfect to lay down and take a nap on?

I don't like it. Sure I like the looks of it, but the feel? Gross!!

My husband thought I was kidding when I told him I didn't like it. He soon found out that I was dead serious.

Things I won't do if it pertains to grass:

*I won't ever walk on it with bare feet. I'd freak out. My brother-in-law thought it would be funny to carry me out in the middle of the lawn, take my flip-flops off and leave me there. Not funny. I don't think I've ran so fast in my whole life! Ha ha.

*I won't sit on it.

*I'll sit on it with a blanket, but I won't like it.

*I'll never ever lay on it.

*If there are sprinklers involved, I'll wear flip-flops.

*If food or something falls on the grass, I won't eat it.

*If my kids are crying in the middle of the lawn and I don't have shoes on, I'll let them cry. (I'll conquer my fear for a few seconds if they're hurt or something. I'm not that crazy. :)

I know. I have a problem. I've had it since I was a little girl, so it's nothing new to me. People always think I'm weird though when I tell them I don't like grass.

Do you guys have any phobias?

Whoa. That is kind of weird. I'm afraid of toads and frogs. I slipped on a pair of my dad's work boots as a kid and marched around the yard, felt something in the shoe, pulled it off and out jumped a toad. Traumatized for life.

I also don't like talking on the phone, although that's more an extreme dislike than a phobia. Like I'd rather drive to the bank to talk with someone there than call on the phone about an issue. The invention of texting and emails is my little mirale there. :)

I'm afraid of spiders and large insects. The small ones don't bother me as much.

awww, that makes me sad, you'll never experience the joy of rolling down a hill. But seriously, when you think about all the gross bugs living in the grass, i can see why you might not want to be around it.

Not fan of any creepy, crawly things. Just thinking about it makes me shiver. That dare TV that would have contestants do all kinds of yucky stuff. Not way.

I don't think there's anything wrong with not wanting to hang out on the grass, especially since there are bugs all over it. Bugs are a big phobia of mine. But on the other hand, I miss lying on the grass with my dog, which is what I used to do when I was a kid; it made me feel so peaceful.

If you're talking about the Florida variety of grass, I'm right there with you. Yuck. Who wants to walk through crabgrass? And without shoes? That's just asking for an injury!

Apparently there are phobia names for everything. So many fears in the world.

I think I have the complete opposite problem. If I'm in the grass, I feel the need to take my shoes off. How do you feel about the fake carpeting grass on mini golf courses?

Stina said...

I never heard of that phobia before, and that's terrible what your brother-in-law did. Now you have to get revenge. Bahahahaha

Wow, I've never heard of that! Spiders and bugs and snakes don't bother me, but I can't abide mice, dead or alive. I can't even look at pictures of them. It makes me squirm and I shudder over and over. I hate them!

Wow, that IS weird! That's something I'd give one of my characters as an odd quirk, but in real life it sounds pretty debilitating! Certainly ways around it though. So I take it you don't golf?

Also, I feel bad now that I read Ilima's answer. I called her on the phone today about an issue. Whoops. :)

Chewing gum and balloons. That's all I have to say about that.

Ilima: I feel that way about grasshoppers. When I was little my friend dropped a jar filled with a ton of them and the jar shattered and they all jumped on me. Yes. Scarred for life.

Micheal: Oh, don't even get me started on spiders! :(

Prerna: Yes. Bugs is a HUGE reason I don't like it.

Donna: Fear Factor? I'd probably pass out before they made me do something ... Ha ha ha.

Neurotic: *shivers* Too many bugs for me. :(

Crystal: Any grass. Not just crab grass. I know. I'm weird. :)

Angela: I know! There are so many I never would have thought of!

Madeline: Mini-golf courses are fine. Although, I still wouldn't walk on them with bare feet I don't think.

Stina: Oh, there was revenge. Trust me! Ha ha ha! :)

Jeigh: My mom is TERRIFIED of mice!

Michelle: I don't mind walking on it as long as I have shoes on. If I don't I won't go near it. :)

I am not a fan of the bugs in the grass, and I hate it when my grass is long. Do you ever mow? Ha! I bet that would be good therapy for you conquering your fear. I am afraid of pesticides and semi-trucks. Wooo...good to get that off my chest.

Chantele Sedgwick said...

Jessie: I hate when my grass is long too! And no, my hubby mows. I can't handle it ... :) And semi-trucks, huh? Interesting! :D

I'm scared of the dark :) Yup, full grown adult here about to turn 30 and I'm still scared of the dark.
My husband bought be a nightlight for Christmas for when he has to work late and I go to bed alone ....
But on the plus side, it's a penguin nightlight and penguins are my favorite animal! :)

Duuuuude. My husband and my middle child have Hastenburaphobia. I never knew it had a name, either! Me? I love grass. I was sitting on my patio writing this afternoon, looking down at the grass, thinking, Dang. If I hadn't *just* watered, I'd totally go lay on it to write. I very much have anti-hastenburaphobia. (It's to make up for my intense claustrophobia and arachnophobia.)

Chantele Sedgwick said...

Rebecca: I'm not a huge fan of the dark either. If I'm alone. If my hubby is with me I'm fine. ;)

Peggy: YAY! I'm not the only one! Everyone always says I'm SO WEIRD! And I'm not a fan of spiders. Like at all. But not as intense as you. ;)
