A whole lot of kissing! And other stuff...

Oh, yes. Kissing. I heart kissing. I love reading about it, watching it, (when it's tastefully done...ahem.), and I enjoy kissing my cute hubby as well. Not gonna lie.
I'm a sucker for romance. I can't write a book without a little love. You know what I mean? I think that's why I love writing for teens. Who doesn't remember their first kiss? The first time they held hands with the person they liked? The first time you said I love you?
Sigh.
There are so many ways to write a love story. Let me take you through some examples.

The Dreaded Love Triangle/Forbidden Love

Now, I'm am NOT the biggest fan of these. I'll be honest. I do like them when they are done well, but when you just throw two hot men into your book who fight over a girl who doesn't really have a personality or wear makeup, then I'm not a fan. And I do like Twilight. Hate me if you will, but I'll admit it. I LIKE IT! :) The love triangle did bug me though. The way Bella would choose Edward, and then keep leading Jacob on. Not that I liked Jacob, because I don't. But I don't like fickle girls who keep going back and forth. Just my opinion. If you have a book like this, good for you! I'll read it, and probably like it. :) Also, I put Twilight under forbidden love. I mean, she falls in love with a vampire for crying out loud. It doesn't get more forbidden than that! ;) (Thanks for reminding me about this one, Jordan!)

The Couple Who Knows They Belong Together

Aragorn. You know I love you. I love Legolas more,(I think it's the pointy ears) but when you're killing orcs with your awesome sword and wooing your elf princess, I think you're pretty hot. ;) Anyway. I love this couple. The couple who fights to be together. The guy who never ever gives up on his lady. The lady who knows she will be with her man forever and fights for him to succeed so he can come sweep her off her feet. The couple who never gives up. Sigh.

The Love At First Sight Couple

Serendipity was the first movie I watched with my hubby on our first date. Cuteness? I think so. ;) Anyway, I just love this movie. I love the chemistry and the sparks these two have when they first meet. The only speak to each other for a moment, but they don't forget each other, even after a few years go by. They still believe they are soulmates, and don't give up until they finally find each other again. And that scene? So sweet and beautiful. Love.

Uh....

I freaking love this kiss. I just had to post it. It's the end scene in Never Been Kissed, and I seriously rewind it like 50 times whenever I watch it. Just kidding. Sort of...

I Hate You, But Then I Love You

I love these types of romances. The kind where the two main characters don't get along at first. At all. They fight, they disagree, they judge. And then something happens. Something that reveals their true character, and their true feelings for each other. And I do love the Colin Firth Pride and Prejudice, but let me just say, this scene in the newer version gives me goosebumps EVERY TIME! Watch it. At least this scene. Love.

The Tragic Romance

I hope everyone has seen Titanic. If not, don't read this one. ;)  I loved this love story. Probably because I'm such a freaking sap, but I did. When the end came, I was so shocked. SO mad. I'm not into the tragic romances. I can't handle it when the couple I've been rooting for, ends up not being able to be together. I love feeling happy at the end of a book or movie. I fall in love with the characters, and when one of the characters dies or gets a serious illness and slowly dies? I can't handle it. Don't even get me started on City of Angels. I'm still mad about that one. But, if it truly makes your story amazing, then do it. I'm not going to tell you what to write! lol If it's done right, and the characters can't be together for a reason, then kill one off! (That sounded really morbid and depressing, but oh well...)

Happily Ever After

Everyone knows fairy tales have a happily ever after. Well, most of them. I'm a sucker for a good fairy tale retelling. They are so romantic. So fun to read. I love the princess/prince characters. The gowns, the dancing, the stolen kisses. Sigh.
Best Friends

So, Sierra pointed out in the comments that I forgot the best friend love story! Ah! This is one of my favorites! The best friends who do everything together suddenly realize they are in love with each other. They get jealous, they secretly watch the other person when they are around the opposite sex, and finally tell each other they can't live without one another. SO CUTE!!

So, which kind of romantic are you? If you like romance that is. Which type of romances do you tend to write?  Do your characters have chemistry with their love interests? It's a must! Do they love each other at first sight? Hate each other? Let's hear it!

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm feeling the need to go write a kissing scene. Laters! ;)

Now I feel like watching Becoming Jane. I love me a--we're meant to be together, but...movie.

What a cute post! I'm a sucker for romance too and can't help but have a good helping of it in each of my books!

How about forbidden love? Romeo and Juliet kind of deal (but without the suicides)?

I've written a couple kinds. Forbidden love, love at first sight, I hate you (and hate you and hate you and all right, you're attractive and I begrudgingly respect you). But I don't like writing kissing scenes!

Ditto on the Twilight love triangle. I don't like fickle girls (and wasn't too fond of Jacob). I didn't use to understand the love/hate romantic relationship until recently. Turns out you can be really attracted to someone who drives you crazy =) My favorite type of romance though... the best friends who belatedly find out they are in love.

I love Happily Ever After. That's why I write fairy tales. I'm with you on the tragic romance. Hated the end of City of Angels. Hated it.

Thanks for ruining Titanic for me! Ha ha ha! I heart kissing scenes as well :D I don't know why, but I tend to write the tragic love at first and then change it at the end. ;) I love a good, fun love movie/book, but I'm drawn to more real-life situations where things aren't always "happy ever after". Fun post, my friend!

This was such a fun post for me to read because I LOVE romance! Forbidden, love-hate, destined to be, you name it, I love it. Not a fan of the tragic. Titanic I could forgive. City of Angels? Not a chance. Hated it. As for me - my hubby and I are the 'best friends fall in love', and going on seventeen years now. :)

I do all kinds :D

I'm in the middle of a dreaded love triangle, but she's clueless that she loves both, and even though it's obvious to the reader who she should be with, she's completely dedicated to boy #1.

Love stories are SO fun. I was laughing with a friend of twitter the other day over consoling ourselves by editing our kissing scenes after a bad day ;)

Uh, yeah! I feel like writing a kissing scene too :) I loved your examples. It made me also want to go watch every one of those movies. Now I might not get much writing done this week. Thanks a lot :)

I admit, I'm a sucker for romance too-- when it's done right. I get really irritated with overly cheesy, unrealistic romances. If it's done right, though, I love all the different kinds. The best friends one is one of my favorites. I love the movie Emma just because of that, and I LOVE the kiss at the end.

Now I want to go write a kissing scene too...

I love all those movies! And that end scene in the newer P&P gives me the chills too- when she's walking towards her in the rising sunlight. Aaahh, I'm such a sap. (Although I'm bugged everytime when all she says to Darcy is "well then"). My first book was fairy-tale-ish love. The second one is more, I hate you then gradually start to love you. I love all kinds! And I love to write the kissing scenes, although it makes me blush like a 12-year-old!

You named some of the best! Another good kissing movie: The Princess Bride. :)

I'll take any love EXCEPT the tragic kind. They have to end up together or it ruins the story for me. I just finished a book that made me so mad. They loved each other so much and then decided to go their own ways at the end and maybe find each other again one day. So annoying.

I've heard the kiss from Never Been Kissed is great, but I've never seen it. Youtube here I come.

Fun post, Chantele:)

There are so many different kinds of love stories that I…uh…love. The love triangles are good for me IF they are done right. Like you, I hate it when the girl leads one of them on, knowing she is in love with the other. Reminds me of bad high school days. I am a big sucker for the forbidden love stories too. The magnetism seems that much more passionate because they know they shouldn't be doing it. Much like eating cheesecake when you're on a diet. It's the BEST cheesecake you've ever had! Fun post!

Love the romantic post-but not vampires-ick.
Best kisser in the movies--hands down is...Jude Law.

You put me in the mood for a good romance movie. My book has a love triangle and a tragic ending. I hope you'll still be my blogger friend.

Oooh, forbidden love (think Tristan & Isolde and Like Water For Chocolate) is probably my favorite, but I am truly just a sucker for love of all kinds in books, t.v., and movies. I am a happily ever after person as well (although I do adore Casablanca!).

Megan @ Reading for Refuge said...

I love romance. Period.
Any romance for me will work.
But... I flippin' love, LOVE love the hate first, love later romances. I don't know why. I can't get enough. That's how Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini is. You have to read it Chan. She literally tries to kill him the first time she meets him. It made my heart melt. Bizarre, I know.0

Sari Webb said...

We're on the same wavelength for so many of these! Love triangles drive me nuts, too. And I'm all about the HEA. Sad endings always drop a book from my 'love it' scale. I just don't like finishing a book and feeling depressed afterward.

Chantele Sedgwick said...

@Becky Taylor I've never seen that one! I've been meaning to watch it though... ;)
@Keary Taylor ME TOO! Love a good romance!
@Jordan McCollum I LOVE writing kissing scenes. Yum! :)
@Sierra Gardner Totally wasn't a fan of Jacob. I also LOVE the best friends who fall in love. SO cute! :)
@Kayeleen Hamblin I can't even talk about City of Angels. Worst. Ending. Ever. I love fairy tales. I'm glad you're writing them! Can't wait to read them someday! :D
@Katie DodgeYou're welcome! Ba ha ha ha! ;) I do like the occasional real-life situations. But I'm a sucker for a happy ending. You know that! :D
@Kimberly Krey I can forgive Titanic too. I still loved the movie, but City of Angels, I will not ever forgive. Yay for seventeen years! :D
@Jolene Perry Your WIP sounds intriguing! ;) Ha ha! I'll have to try editing my kissing scenes when I have a bad day. Great idea!

Chantele Sedgwick said...

@Michelle Merrill You're welcome my friend! :D Enjoy those movies, because I'm going to be watching them too! lol
@Shallee I don't like overly cheesy either. The realistic though. Love. I LOVED Emma too! :D
@Melanie Stanford Doesn't it give you serious chills? The music, the setting, Mr. Darcy's words. Talk about making a girl weak in the knees! :D
@Michelle Teacress Oh, I love the Princess Bride!! I'm going to have to watch that now... ;)
@Ruth Josse I am exactly the same way. No tragic for me. Can't handle it. It really makes me SO mad! I hope you enjoy Never Been Kissed! SO GOOD! :D
@L.J. Uh...I LOVE cheesecake!! Yum!! And I do like love triangles, just not the way I described. And forbidden love stories are the BEST!
@The Desert Rocks Not a vampire fan, eh? ;) I love me some Jude Law as well. Yum!
@Jessie Oliveros I'll definitely still be your blogger friend! I'll forgive you for writing a tragic ending. Just this once though! ;)
@Megan I love all kinds of love as well. Sigh. I really want to write a Romeo and Juliet retelling. Minus the suicides at the end! :P
@Megan @ Reading for Refuge I love romance too, Megan. Sigh. I'm definitely going to read Starcrossed! I've heard it's amazing! And if you love a book, I will too! :D

Chantele Sedgwick said...

@Sari Webb I can't handle sad endings. They make me depressed too. :(

Misha Gerrick said...

Lol I would love to tell you, but then I'm giving parts of my book away. :-D

Still, I like any sort of romances as long as they are done well.

Jeigh said...

I love romance, and especially young love. Ahh, so sweet! My WIP is best friends falling for each other, so it's my current favorite. I like watching kissing, too, as long as I don't see tongues. (yuck)

Melanie Jacobson said...

I'm a big fan of I hate you but now I love you and best friends who fall in love. Those are always super fun to watch. Although my real life story is we're-meant-to-be-together and that's awfully nice.

Good article. It's very unfortunate that over the last several years, the travel industry has already been able to to handle terrorism, SARS, tsunamis, bird flu, swine flu, and the first ever entire global economic depression. Through all of it the industry has really proven to be sturdy, resilient and also dynamic, obtaining new approaches to deal with misfortune. There are always fresh problems and possibilities to which the field must all over again adapt and answer. строительный портал 1
