2 Points of View?

I'm currently working on a YA novel where both of the main characters alternate POV. I switch each chapter. I'm also writing it in 1st person, which I've heard is not the best to do in a book with two protagonists. Anyway, I wanted your take. Do you like getting inside two characters heads? Do you think 1st person would work, even if the two characters are very different? I do know a few books that have gotten away with it.
Take Shiver for example. (I can't ever top this book, since it's so beautifully written.) It worked. BUT, some people like 3rd person better with two points of view. I'm debating whether to change mine to 3rd person or not. It's a tough decision, since I love writing 1st person, but if it will make my book stronger, then I'm open to change. I'm just not 100% sure what to do. Thoughts? What do you guys like? 1st person or 3rd?
In other news...I bottled a ton of peaches yesterday. I did something productive besides feeding, clothing, and taking kids to school! ;)

I have one WIP with a single first person point of view. My other is an alternating third person, but it's not set. I could switch to any character I feel needs to tell that part of the story.
